This is me

Hi, my name is Silvia Osorio. As a first-generation student navigating my endeavors through college, learning who I am, and developing my professional career has been such an enlightening experience.

The Background

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I took this for granted until I came to college in LA. Once I started telling my out-of-state friends what I used to do when I was younger like spending my summers on Malibu beaches or randomly taking trips to the Griffith Observatory on a school night, I realized I had been blessed growing up here.

I find my inspiration through my grandparents. They were immigrants from Mexico who came to the US in search of better opportunities for their families. They left everything they had and took the risk without looking back. I take the bravery they had when coming to the US, and transform it into my own form of courage to use when tackling obstacles that feel larger than me.

I originally had the desire to go to college across the US in New York but my gut feeling steered me right and led me right to Loyola Marymount University, located in Los Angeles. Even in my senior year, I had no idea what I wanted to study until I was given the opportunity to run my high school's campus ministry's social media account.

Marketing

Once I realized I had an eye for marketing, I stuck with it and ran. 2 months into my freshman year at LMU I landed a position as a Marketing Ambassador, running all the social media accounts for the College of Business Administration. The following summer I worked as a Marketing Intern at the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce. At this moment all I am seeing is social media marketing, which wasn't a bad thing but certainly was not something I saw myself doing for the rest of my life.

Then one day while I was working at Lululemon a guest came in wanting to try on some of our recently launched shoes. I started making small talk and I came to learn she used to work at Lululemon as a Marketing Strategist. I turned my networking hat on and the following summer I was interning for her diving deep into the realm of Marketing Strategy.

At my university, there are marketing pathways for students to choose that focus on different tracks. The most popular and most competitive of the pathways is the M-School. The M-School focuses on content creation and strategy which hit the nail right on the head for what I wanted to pursue. The application consisted of creating an Instagram storyboard of our life explaining why we would make a great asset. And to my surprise, I got in! Involvements

Going through my first year of college online was not easy. If I thought trying to take calculus over zoom was difficult, wait until I found out I was supposed to be making the best friends of my life but I was stuck sitting in my childhood bedroom.

I never pictured myself in a sorority. I understood all the stereotypes that came with greek life and I knew I didn't want to take part in any of it. 3 months into Zoom College I decided to go through the recruitment process. I received a bid to join Pi Beta Phi and I would not have changed that decision in any lifetime. I have met some of my favorite people who helped me grow into the young woman I am today.

Additionally, during my freshman year, I decided to take all the risks and apply to be a tour guide and orientation leader. Pretty ambitious for someone who has never stepped foot on campus if you ask me. Both of those positions showed me what a sense of community felt like on campus. Through these positions, I was able to share the love I have for LMU with others in hopes they come to share the same love!
